Some haircuts photograph well and live badly. The hypster — soft, collar-grazing layers with a lived-in texture — is the rare cut that does both. It grows out gracefully, air-dries happily and flatters nearly every face shape we see in the chair.
What exactly is the hypster cut?
Think of it as the polished cousin of the shag: long, blended layers through the mid-lengths, a soft fringe that can be worn parted or swept, and ends that are textured rather than blunt. It sits somewhere between the collarbone and the shoulders, which keeps it versatile — tie it up, tuck it back, or let it fall.
The magic is in the internal layering. By removing weight from underneath rather than chopping visible steps on top, the hair keeps its length while gaining movement. Fine hair looks fuller; thick hair feels lighter.
Who does it suit?
Almost everyone — with small adjustments. Round faces benefit from longer, face-framing pieces that start below the chin. Square jawlines soften with a curtain fringe. Curly hair loves it too, though we cut curls dry and leave extra length for spring-up.
The best haircut is the one you forget about — it just falls right, every morning, with almost no effort.
Styling it at home
You need three things: a volumising mousse, a round brush (or a blow-dry brush), and ninety seconds. Scrunch mousse into damp roots, rough-dry upside down until 80% dry, then smooth the top layer. Finish with a pea-sized drop of oil on the ends. Done.
Maintenance is forgiving: a dusting every 10–12 weeks keeps the shape. If you're growing it out, the layers blend seamlessly into longer lengths — no awkward phase.
