Gel polish doesn't ruin nails — bad removal and skipped aftercare do. As nail specialists, we can always tell who oils daily and who peels their gels off in traffic. This guide covers the five habits that keep natural nails strong under any manicure.

Oil every day, no exceptions

Cuticle oil isn't decoration — it keeps the nail plate flexible so polish moves with it instead of lifting. Jojoba-based oils penetrate best. Keep a pen in your bag and one by your bed; thirty seconds, twice a day, changes everything.

Never peel, pick or prise

Peeling a lifting gel pulls up layers of your natural nail with it — that's where thinning comes from, not the product. If an edge lifts, file it smooth and book a fix. Proper soak-off takes fifteen minutes and leaves the nail intact.

Nails are jewels, not tools. The clients with the strongest nails are the ones who stopped opening cans with them.

Schedule breaks and builder wisely

After three consecutive gel sets, give nails one bare week with a strengthening treatment — or switch to builder gel, which adds a protective flexible layer while nails recover underneath. Wear gloves for cleaning, hydrate from the inside, and let your technician, not your teeth, handle chips.
